Wouter-jan Van Dijk made a memorable impression at the 2023 Baja 1000 by completing the full race distance by himself. His motorcycle barely passed SCORE International inspection and was held together by zip ties. Despite the challenges, he is gearing up for his second race with optimism.
Van Dijk’s debut in SCORE racing was at the 2023 Baja 1000, encouraged by his friend Shane Moss. Previously, he had experience in enduro racing, including Red Bull Romaniacs.
“I didn’t have high expectations,” Van Dijk shared with the SCORE Journal. “I just wanted to experience the different terrains and take the race as it came.”
He purchased a KTM 500 EXC in San Diego and traveled across Baja California to La Paz for the race start. Despite making last-minute repairs to meet SCORE regulations, he attracted attention for his pace. Throughout the race, he faced challenges like a broken bike rim and navigation system, resorting to zip ties for quick fixes. Competing solo in the Pro Moto Ironman class added to the difficulty.
Van Dijk persevered through the night hours, receiving support from fans, racers, and bystanders. He ultimately finished in Ensenada, placing seventh in his class, capturing the attention of the racing world.
Now, Van Dijk focuses on the 2024 race, a shorter 869-mile course. To help cover expenses, he launched a GoFundMe campaign which has raised AUD$2,438 (€1,476.14) so far.
“Any help is appreciated as I don’t think my rim will survive another Baja trip with just zip ties,” Van Dijk joked on social media. He plans to compete in the Pro Moto Ironman class once again.
The 2024 Baja 1000 will begin on 15 November.
