Another great holiday read is The Lonely Breed by Ron Clarke with Norm Harris.
One of my all-time favorite books, The Lonely Breed, contains stories about some of Ron Clarke’s most admired individuals.
There’s a particular story that never fails to bring tears to my eyes – it’s about Jim Hogan, the only Irishman to win the European marathon championships.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jim in 2006 and shared some wonderful moments with him thanks to David Bedford and Ian Stewart.
Jim passed away in 2015, making his story even more priceless.
Jim Hogan’s victory at the 1966 European Athletics Championships after his struggles in Rome serves as a classic marathon tale!
He also penned a remarkable book, The Irishman who Ran for England by Jim Hogan.
Jim Hogan left us at the age of 81 in 2015.
We highly recommend both of these books!

Other book suggestions: Self Made Olympian by Ron Daws, A Clean Pair of Heels by Murray Halberg, and Pre! by Tom Jordan.
The cover photo features Ian Stewart, Bill Rodgers, and Mariano Haro – exceptional cross country runners. Stewart achieved numerous victories, Rodgers made a mark in 1975, and Haro set national records in Spain.
