The first weekend of ITA Division I Regional Championship play has concluded. With players competing from various regions, regional singles champions and finalists, as well as regional doubles champions, have now qualified for the season-ending NCAA Championships in Waco, Texas from November 19-24.

At the Men’s Atlantic Region, Connor Henry Van Schalkwyk of Old Dominion captured the regional men’s singles title with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 20th-ranked Dylan Dietrich of Virginia. With the win, he became the first singles champion from ODU since Francois Le Tallec won in 2021, the last time ODU hosted the regional.

Rolling through the tournament as the top seed, winning five of his six matches in straight sets, Michigan State junior Ozan Baris became the first Michigan State men’s tennis player to win the ITA Midwest Regional Singles Championship title. Baris entered the fall season ranked No. 1 in the Division I Men’s ITA Collegiate Tennis National Preseason Rankings.

In the Men’s Ohio Valley regional, the Vols were well represented at the tournament with Shunsuke Mitsui and Alex Kotzen tying as co-champions. Prior to reaching the finals, the standout senior Mitsui claimed his 100th career singles win.

Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State secured the women’s singles title at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Memphis, Tennessee. Entering as the No. 2, Komor battle through the main draw, defeating Wichita State’s Xin Tong Wang 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the final. The win makes it back-to-back years that a Cowgirl has won the event, with Ange Oby Kajuru doing so last year.

Ohio State’s Luciana Perry captured the Midwest Regional women’s singles title. The No. 2 seed won six straight matches, dropping just two sets combined, defeated No. 1 seed Julia Fliegner 6-1, 6-1. With the win, the championship is the first regional singles title in program history and the third regional title, Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford having won the regional doubles title in 2022.

For the first time since 2021, Stanford swept both the women’s singles and doubles titles at the Northwest Regional Championships. Freshman Valerie Glozman defeated senior Connie Ma in singles, before joining forces with Ma to defeat Alexis Blokhina and Valencia Xu in doubles. With the win, Glozman becomes the first freshman to win the singles title since Ma in 2021.

At the ITA Southern Regional Championships, it was the Auburn Tigers who were in full control, with freshman Merna Refaat taking home the title, defeating teammate Angella Okutoyi 6-2, 6-3. For the first time, all of the singles semifinalists were Auburn players as Merna Refaat, DJ Bennett, Ava Hrastar and Angella Okutoyi reached the final four. Refaat and Okutoyi went on to team up against teammates Bennett and Hrastar in the doubles final, ultimately falling 4-6, 2-6.
