The second and final weekend of ITA Division I Regional Championship play has come to an end. With players competing from various regions, both regional singles champions and finalists, as well as regional doubles champions, have now qualified for the season-ending NCAA Championships in Waco, Texas from November 19-24.
At the Men’s Central Regional, the Sooners dominated in both the singles and doubles draws, sweeping the tournament to come away with the singles co-champion titles and the doubles title. Sooner freshman Oscar Lacides went undefeated in the tournament, claiming the title of co-champion with fellow teammate Jordan Hasson. Lacides went on to partner with Bruno Nhavene, rolling through the doubles draw with four wins on their way to the finals, defeating Oklahoma State’s Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile 6-2, 6-3 to collect their fifth win of the tournament in the championship match.
University of Denver men’s tennis player, and top-seed, Daniel Sancho Arbizu won the all-Denver singles final at the 2024 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, defeating teammate Raffaello Papajcik 6-4, 6-2. En route to the title, Sancho Arbizu lost just two sets and earned wins over four seeded players. Sancho Arbizu is the fourth Pioneer to win an ITA Regional singles title.
The UCLA men’s tennis team dominated the Southwest Regional Championships, sweeping both the singles and doubles draws. The second-seeded Spencer Johnson collected six wins over five days without dropping a set, defeating San Diego’s Savriyan Danilov 7-5, 7-6(2) in the semifinals and UC Irvine’s Noah Zamora 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. Moving to the doubles draw, Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi teamed up to take the doubles title. The pair, who had never played together before this weekend, defeated Savriyan Danilov and Iiro Vasa of San Diego in the finals.
At the Men’s Southern Regional, Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State each qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships. Jovanovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Auburn’s Billy Blaydes while Sanchez Martinez edged his Bulldog teammate Mario Martinez Serrano in a close 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 battle. This is the second consecutive season that both Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez will be representing Mississippi State at the NCAA Singles Championship.
At the Texas Regional Championships, freshman Timo Legout claimed the singles title, defeating fellow teammate Jonah Brawsell in the finals. Earlier in that day, Legout paired with sophomore Lucas Brown to win the doubles title. Legout, who is a former top-15 ranked ITF junior player, is playing in his first collegiate tournaments this fall and has still yet to lose a match for the Longhorns.
Irina Balus and Eleana Yu of Duke both advanced to the finals of the Women’s Carolina Regional. Balus and Yu also teamed up in doubles, where they made a run to the finals before falling to North Carolina’s Carson Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby 5-7, 5-7 who claimed the lone qualifying spot into the NCAA Individual Championships.
Making history as the first-ever Panther to win a regional singles title, FIU’s Ekaterina Khairutdinova earned the 2024 ITA Southeast Regional singles crown on Tuesday. In the final, the junior defeated Miami’s Raquel Gonzalez 6-3, 6-1. Before the finals, Khairutdinova defeated opponents from Florida, Georgia, and UCF.
