๐ The origin story
The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), the longest-running womenโs pro sports organization in the U.S., was established in 1950, following the formation of the menโs PGA in 1916. The LPGA founders, consisting of 13 trailblazing women, were involved in every aspect of the organization, from planning and organizing tournaments to setting up courses and drafting the tourโs by-laws. Despite facing sexism in sports, they paved the way for future generations.
Although the Womenโs PGA was formed in 1944, it only lasted five years due to financial issues. The LPGA saw its first TV coverage in 1963 with the airing of the U.S. Open final round, marking a significant milestone in women’s golf history.
Throughout the 1960s, the LPGA expanded to 32 events with an increase in prize money. However, achieving full parity in the sport remains a goal for the future.
