After participating in seven or eight games over five days, the semifinalists in women’s 3×3 basketball—Germany, Spain, the United States, and Canada—finally had a chance to relax as no games were scheduled on Sunday.
The action, however, quickly picks up again on Monday, Aug. 5. The first women’s semifinal match between Spain and the United States starts at 11:30 a.m. ET (USA Network), followed by Germany and Canada in the second women’s semifinal at 12:30 p.m. ET (USA Network). The losers of both games will face each other in the bronze medal match at 3 p.m. ET (E! Network), while the semifinal winners will compete for gold at 4 p.m. ET (NBC).
Can Team USA carry their momentum to a gold medal?
For the Americans, the day off was a well-deserved break. After losing their first three games, Team USA’s 3×3 gold medal defense seemed in jeopardy. However, they bounced back with five consecutive wins to make it to the semifinals, where they face Spain, the team they defeated to start their winning streak.
The American team of Rhyne Howard, Dearica Hamby, Cierra Burdick, and Hailey Van Lith are hitting their stride at the right time. They defeated China in their final pool play game, earning a second match against the Chinese in the play-in game. Hamby’s exceptional performance led to a 21-13 win and a spot in the semifinals.
To reach the gold medal match, Team USA needs to maintain their cohesion and connection on the court. Their improving performance will be crucial against the strong competition.
Can the Plouffe twins lead Canada to victory?
In the other semifinal, Canada will seek redemption after a pool play loss to Germany. Kacie Bosch’s outstanding performance helped Canada secure a spot in the semis. However, the Plouffe twins, Michelle and Katherine, are key players for Canada and may hold the key to overcoming Germany.
For Canada, Germany, and Spain, Monday is an opportunity to win their country’s first-ever medal in women’s 3×3 basketball, showcasing the sport’s growing international competitiveness.
