The USWNT is set to kick off their 2024 Olympic campaign today, facing Zambia in their first group stage match.
They aim to start with a strong performance before facing Germany and Australia in a packed schedule that begins in Nice and moves to Marseille.
The journey to Olympic gold begins now
Eight out of the 12 teams in the group stage will advance to the quarterfinals on August 3rd, with two teams moving on through a third-place tiebreaker. The initial success in the first week can shape the path to the medal rounds.
“There are top footballing nations in this tournament. I believe surprises in women’s soccer are a thing of the past — we need to respect the quality of the global competition,” stated US head coach Emma Hayes in a recent press conference.
“We’ve evolved and learned a lot,” mentioned USWNT forward Sophia Smith. “Our focus is on this tournament and moving forward, as dwelling on the past serves no purpose.”
Assessing the challenges for the USWNT in the Olympics
Hayes’s comments might ring true right from the start. Despite being the lowest-ranked team in Group B according to FIFA rankings, Zambia can pose a threat to the USWNT. While it’s their first encounter, Zambia has experience from the Tokyo Olympics and the 2023 World Cup.
For instance, Barbra Banda, the main striker, is currently leading the NWSL’s Golden Boot race, showcasing her skills and competing with USWNT players regularly.
“I know the danger she presents,” stated US defender Emily Fox. “Their team as a whole is a threat, especially in transitions. However, we are prepared for it.”
Hayes has stressed the importance of unity within the starting lineup, hinting that the XI today may resemble the lineups from the recent friendly matches against Mexico and Costa Rica. The US won 1-0 against Mexico and drew 0-0 with Costa Rica before heading to France for training camp.
