National Champions have now been crowned in both Cary, NC and Tulsa, OK as the 2025 ITA All-American Championships have officially come to a close after more than a week of play from many of the nation’s best Division I tennis players.
As one of the most prestigious tournaments on the college tennis calendar, history was made on Sunday as we saw first-time winners, blue blood programs return to the top, and familiar faces flourish across the singles and doubles finals.
Beginning in Cary, it was Stanford who returned to the top in women’s singles as sophomore, Valerie Glozman prevailed over fellow sophomore from Texas, Carmen Andreea Herea. As two of the top seeded players in the draw, neither player had faced off with one another in the past making for an intriguing matchup between two rising stars of our sport.
Fighting off a strong first game from Herea and some momentum swinging deuce points to open up the match, Glozman settled in and earned multiple breaks to close out the first set with a 6-2 margin over Herea. Backed by her strong movement and slicing ability from both wings, Glozman was able to neutralize Herea in the second set as well, closing out the second set with a 6-3 margin to claim the title.
Marking the first Cardinal to win the singles title since 2010, Glozman’s win marked the end to an over ten year drought of major singles titles by a Stanford women’s tennis player.
In doubles, the Wisconsin duo of Maria Sholokhova and Lucie Urbanova made history by becoming the first Badger duo to be crowned ITA All-American Doubles Champions. Facing the Oklahoma duo of Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum, who dethroned the ITA Preseason No. 1 ranked doubles team the day prior, Sholokhova and Urbanova showed their freshness and focus throughout the match winning 6-3, 6-3 over the Sooner pairing.
This championship marks the second in as many years for Sholokhova as she was the first player in Wisconsin women’s tennis history to be crowned the ITA All-American Singles Champion last year in Cary.
Across the consolation singles draw, Piper Charney (Michigan) and Savannah Dada-Mascoll (Appalachian State) claimed the final two NCAA qualifying spots by finishing as the consolation singles draw finalists.
Turning our attention to Tulsa, it was Arizona’s Jay Friend who prevailed amongst a loaded field of players beating Ohio State’s Aidan Kim 6-2, 6-4 in today’s championship match.
After a dominant summer in which he won gold at the FISU University Games for Japan, Friend continued his dominant form in Oklahoma to start the fall season by becoming the first Arizona player to win the ITA All-American Championships in program history. The win also marked the first major individual championship win for any Arizona tennis player regardless of gender.
Looking over to doubles, the top-seeded pairing of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez (Mississippi State) went wire-to-wire in the doubles draw to take the ITA All-American Championship doubles title. Winning 7-5, 6-3 over Andrew Delgado and DK Suresh (Wake Forest), Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez showed why they were the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the ITA Preseason Rankings by continuing to dominate fellow ranked teams throughout this tournament.
The pairing are the second Bulldog pairing to claim the title in tournament history joining Daniel Courcol and Laurent Miquelard who took home the doubles title back in the 1992 season.
Claiming the final two NCAA Singles qualifying spots were Kenta Miyoshi (Illinois) and Duncan Chan (TCU) who each bounced back after round of sixteen losses. They will join the eight quarterfinalists in Orlando this May for the NCAA Individual Championships.
The ITA All-American Championships also marked the first qualifying tournament for the 2025 NCAA Individual Championships. A complete list of qualified singles players and doubles teams can be found below.
