The Notre Dame Women’s Tennis team split this weekend’s road swing through Virginia, beating No. 57 Virginia Tech 4-3 Friday night before dropping today’s match at No. 5 Virginia 1-4. The Irish are now 15-4 overall and 5-3 in ACC play. These two matches were the last road matches of the year. Notre Dame was 5-2 away from the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Against Virginia Tech, the Irish jumped out to a early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. After dropping court one, the duo of Bianca Molnar/Bojana Pozder won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to tie the opening portion of the match. Rylie Hanford/Nibi Ghosh followed with the clinching of the crucial point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
The Irish got two more points quickly after that after a couple of set straight wins from Pozder at No. 3 singles and Ghosh at No. 4 singles.
That’s when the Hokies made their comeback. Wins at No. 6, 5 and 2 singles tied the match at three-all.
Like she’s done all year, Akari Matsuno came through yet again for Notre Dame. The 101st-ranked player in the nation took the match at No. 1 singles 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Irish.
Against Virginia today, Notre Dame was able to take the doubles point again with wins by Hanford/Ghosh and Molnar/Pozder. Hanford/Ghosh took down 28th-ranked Salas/Xu in dominating fashion 6-1.
Notre Dame will close the season with four-straight home matches, starting this weekend against No. 30 Clemson at 4 p.m. Friday and No. 25 Georgia Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m. All regular season Notre Dame tennis matches are free and open to the public.
