Houston Rockets sponsored a 3-point contest as part of 713 Day celebrations.
HOUSTON — 713 Day, Houston’s unofficial holiday, celebrations continued with a little help from the Rockets.
The franchise sponsored a 3-point contest in downtown, bringing out fans and Hall of Famer and WNBA Legend, former Houston Comets powerhouse, Sheryl Swoopes.
“I did a three-pointer contest, and I did the skill contest,” said contestant Aeris Sanders.
And those there to play also showed their city some love.
“Houston has been a part of my life, a new home away from home for me,” said contestant Cory Griffin.
Swoopes finds joy in seeing these young faces.
“I saw her walking in and I was like, wait, I know who that is,” said Amaya Padmore.
There’s still a lot of love and basketball in the City of Houston as the Rockets continue to make major moves, adding Kevin Durant to the roster. And as excitement around the WNBA builds, there’s hope to see the Comets return.
“For us to be the first to win the first four championships and did not have a team now. And I say this all the time, it’s a travesty. How can you be so great and now we don’t have a team?” said Swoopes.
Swoopes says there’s support to bring back the team that won the WNBA’s first four championships. And the excitement about the league is undeniable.
“I think the fans want it, former players want it, current players want it. Just because Houston is a great city,” Swoopes said.
In a few years, 10th grader Padmore may be ready to suit up.
“I want Houston to get back in it for sure. I think Houston would have a great WNBA team once we get back in it,” she said.
