Grading Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s 1st half of 2024 WNBA season
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Chicago Sky have relied on multiple players for scoring in the first half of the 2024 WNBA season. However, one player has stood out above the rest. Former Atlanta Dream draft pick and first-year Sky guard Chennedy Carter has showcased impressive scoring performances in the season’s initial games. But has her performance earned a strong midseason evaluation?

Chennedy Carter entered the professional league as the fourth overall pick for the Dream in the 2020 WNBA Draft. She had a notable rookie season, averaging a career-best 17.4 points with a 37.5 percent three-point shooting accuracy. After a season with the Dream, Carter faced suspension for her behavior and later joined the Los Angeles Sparks in 2022 before being released from the team.

Carter spent time playing overseas in China and Turkey, notably excelling with Bursa in 2023 with impressive stats. In 2024, she secured a roster spot with the Sky and has exceeded expectations since joining the team.

Grade: B+

Throughout the first 23 games of the 2024 season, Carter has averaged 16.4 points and a career-high 1.2 steals per game. She leads Chicago in scoring and demonstrates exceptional shot creation skills that catch opponents off guard.

When Marina Mabrey and other key players struggled to produce, Carter stepped up with quick offense. Starting as a bench player, she earned a spot in the starting lineup due to her consistent performances.

One of Carter’s standout moments was her 34-point game against the Las Vegas Aces on July 16, leading to the Sky’s victory.

Despite some hiccups, like a flagrant foul incident in June, Carter has received a B+ grade for her notable contributions in the first half of the season.

Carter credits her improvement to the support from her coaches and teammates as she continues to acclimate to Chicago.

In a post-game interview after the Aces win, Carter emphasized the impact of her coaches and teammates on her offensive consistency. She expressed gratitude for the trust and opportunities given to her by the team.

Carter’s offensive prowess and growth suggest a promising future with the Sky as she continues to gel with her teammates. The team’s performance in the second half of the season remains an intriguing prospect to watch.
