The Eagles were back to work on Monday as they prepare for their first preseason game on Friday night. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke to reporters and discussed his gameday operation for the defense, as well as the current development of the linebacker group.
Fangio mentioned that head coach Nick Sirianni has not made a final decision yet, but he supports players getting some preseason snaps. He emphasized the importance of players not wanting their first snaps of the year to come in Week 1.
Here’s what else the DC had to say:
On game-day operations
Sirianni stated that Fangio would be communicating to the sideline from up in the booth. Fangio explained that being in the booth provides the best view of the field without relying on others for information. He highlighted the significance of having a clear view during game day.
“My most important job on game day is to call the game, and I need to have the best view — and I don’t have to rely on others to give me a bunch of information.”
Fangio mentioned that all the position coaches will be on the field to relay any necessary information to the players.
On Nakobe Dean’s development
“I thought Nakobe [Dean] had a strong start in the first few days of practice. He took a slight step back in the stadium practice, but overall, he’s been performing well.”
On the LB group
Fangio addressed comments made by Devin White regarding the linebacker group needing to earn the right to blitz. He noted that the group has had mixed performances in that aspect and stressed the importance of winning battles against running backs.
“We need to win a high percentage of the battles when we go against the running back. It’s hard to play good defense without good ILB play.”
Fangio explained the significance of inside linebackers in today’s game and how their performance is crucial for a strong defense.
Other notables
Fangio mentioned his involvement in bringing back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and acknowledged the player’s performance in camp so far. He highlighted the competition among the cornerback and inside linebacker groups, emphasizing that they still have time to make decisions.
The DC also spoke about the development of Cooper DeJean and rookie Jalyx Hunt, praising their efforts and commitment to improvement. He mentioned other players like Bryce Huff, Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, and Nolan Smith, commending their progress and dedication.
