Why Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell should coach US relay team: A modest proposal for our short relay teams

This content was originally written by Jeff Benjamin in 2016 following the US relay teams. Watching a US men’s team with a subpar first handoff reminded me of the lack of success the US men have had in the 4x100m relay at the Olympics since 2004.

Do you agree?

On a snowy Saturday, let’s start a conversation. Jeff Benjamin proposes considering Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell as relay coaches. What are your thoughts?

Making coaching changes isn’t easy.

In sports, the bottom line is winning. When a team isn’t winning, changes are typically made at the leadership level. Coaches and managers are easier to replace than an entire team. Change often starts at the top.

The once dominant American men’s 4×100 team has struggled in recent years. With disqualifications, dropped batons, and strong competition from other countries, USA track fans are understandably frustrated. This frustration leads to calls for change. Perhaps bringing Leroy Burrell and Carl Lewis on board for a fresh start could be beneficial.

Here are some reasons for this change:

1) Carl Lewis is a legendary sports figure whose involvement could boost the sport’s visibility.

2) Leroy Burrell, a former Gold Medalist and world record holder, has experience coaching at the University of Houston. Having him and Lewis on the team could be a winning combination.

3) Both Burrell and Lewis have excelled in 4×100 relays at major events. Their success in the past could be instrumental in reviving the team.

4) The “Lewis Aura” has been evident in relay performances. His impact is significant, and his presence could be a game-changer.

5) Lewis’ confidence and presence could be beneficial for the team, similar to successful coaching tactics in other sports.

6) Both Burrell and Lewis have experience coaching young athletes, which could benefit the development of future sprinters.

Potential factors like politics and personalities may influence this change. However, American Track fans hope that with the right adjustments, the US men’s 4×100 relay team can regain its former glory with the guidance of two legends from the 20th century.

Leroy and Carl– What are your thoughts?
