Angelo Leo secured both the IBF featherweight title and a place at the top of 2024’s Knockouts of the Year list with a stunning one-punch knockout of Luis Alberto Lopez.
Leo (24-1, 11 KO) fought in his hometown of Albuquerque with a clear game plan to work the jab, capitalize on Lopez’s wild swings, get inside with body shots, and tie up before Lopez could respond. Despite Lopez’s trademark awkward flurries, the fight remained competitive with momentum swings that kept it up for grabs as the championship rounds neared.
In the 10th round, Lopez dropped his guard after a jab, allowing Leo to land a perfect left hook that knocked him out cold. Lopez struggled to regain consciousness by the count of 10.
Leo, now a two-division champion at 30 years old, executed his plan flawlessly and defeated one of the toughest featherweights in the sport.
Lopez’s lack of defensive strategy proved costly, and he now faces the need to improve his technical skills to compensate for his weaknesses.
Referee Ernie Sharif’s inconsistent officiating during the fight drew criticism for not handling the rough nature of the bout effectively.
Lindolfo Delgado out-slugs Bryan Flores in battle of unbeatens
2016 Olympian Lindolfo Delgado maintained his undefeated record with a hard-fought split decision victory over Bryan Flores.
Delgado (21-0, 15 KO) started slow but scored a knockdown in the third round against the aggressive Flores (26-1-1, 15 KO). Despite being warned for a low blow, Flores lost a point in the seventh round for an accidental foul.
The action intensified in the later rounds as both fighters traded close-range blows, with Delgado ultimately securing the win with justifiable scorecards.
Delgado’s performance may not pose a threat to top competitors, but with improved early aggression and output, he could become a challenging opponent. Flores’ future appearances on Top Rank cards are eagerly anticipated.
