Who will win the WNBA championship? Aces? Liberty? Bold predictions from our experts as play resumes

A month without basketball has come to an end, specifically WNBA basketball. Following the exciting conclusion of the Paris Olympic basketball tournament, the gold-medal winning Americans have returned to their respective WNBA teams. The New York Liberty finished the All-Star/Olympic break with the best record in the league (21-4) and are on a quest for their first title. Despite a slow start, the Las Vegas Aces are positioned fifth at 16-8 and have the potential to achieve the WNBA’s first three-peat since the Houston Comets from 1997-2000. Several other contenders like the Connecticut Sun, Minnesota Lynx, and Seattle Storm are in the mix, while teams at the bottom half of the standings are looking to make a statement.

As games resume on Thursday, here are five predictions for the remainder of the season.

Which team will make a second-half comeback?

Sabreena Merchant predicts Minnesota. With Napheesa Collier back in action, the Lynx have shown strength on both ends of the floor. Cheryl Reeve is no longer under pressure after Team USA’s success, and Minnesota’s solid defense can capitalize on their easy remaining schedule. Ben Pickman suggests keeping an eye on the Atlanta Dream, who have the potential to perform better in the second half after key players return from injuries.

What is the biggest question?

Pickman wonders if any Olympic stars who are currently unsigned will make an impact in the coming games. Merchant questions whether the Las Vegas Aces have what it takes to achieve a three-peat in a challenging season.

Who will win Rookie of the Year?

Merchant and Pickman both choose Caitlin Clark as the top candidate for Rookie of the Year based on her outstanding performances and impact on the league.

Who will win MVP?

Pickman and Merchant both predict A’ja Wilson as the MVP of the season, highlighting her exceptional performance and potential unanimous vote.

Who will win the WNBA championship?

Merchant leans towards the New York Liberty as a potential champion despite past disappointments, while Pickman sticks with his preseason choice of the Las Vegas Aces, emphasizing their strong lineup with players like A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray.
