CT Sun Guard Viciously Calls Out WNBA After Game At TD Garden

BOSTON — The Connecticut Sun and the Los Angeles Sparks played the first-ever WNBA game at TD Garden on Tuesday night.

Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington expressed disappointment in the WNBA’s lack of promotion for such a significant game.

Prior to the game, Carrington took to social media to voice her concerns. After leading Connecticut to a 69-61 victory over the Sparks, she continued to call out the league for its shortcomings.

“I believe in being honest, and I feel that Connecticut as a franchise is often overlooked,” Carrington stated. “Sometimes, you have to take matters into your own hands, so that’s what I did. I think the league could have done a lot more to publicize the game. Connecticut announced this game almost a year ago, probably shortly after last season ended, so there was plenty of time to ensure proper promotion.”

“However, despite the lack of promotion, the game was sold out, we emerged victorious, so I guess my tweet made a difference,” Carrington added.

TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, was packed with 19,156 fans for the game, just over 100 miles from the Sun’s home arena.

The game was broadcasted locally on NBC Sports Boston, but Carrington was still displeased. Despite scoring 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting in the victory, she believed a broader audience should have been able to watch. ESPN, a WNBA partner, was airing a fantasy football draft on ESPN2 during the game time.

“The game deserved a national television broadcast,” Carrington emphasized. “A game of this historic significance should have been accessible to a wider audience without requiring a subscription. But that’s just my opinion, and I may be biased.”
