Williams driver Alexander Albon, who secured an impressive starting position for tomorrow’s Dutch Grand Prix, has been disqualified from today’s qualifying session.
Albon, born in London and of Thai descent, had a successful qualifying session, achieving eighth place on the grid. This result was a testament to the latest upgrade package introduced by Williams at Zandvoort on Friday.
However, a report from Jo Bauer, the FIA F1 Technical Delegate, raised concerns about a potential issue with the floor body post-qualifying, prompting the matter to be brought to the attention of the stewards.
The upgraded floor had a significantly different geometry compared to the previous version, but the FIA’s measurements revealed that it exceeded the regulatory volume specified in Article 3.5.1 of the technical regulations. As a result, Albon was excluded from today’s qualifying session and will start from the back of the grid.
Williams have stated that they will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the technical infringement.
Additionally, the stewards’ verdict outlined the details of the measurement discrepancy and the subsequent penalty imposed on Albon and the team.
