Manchester United have struggled to score goals in the new Premier League season, a problem that has continued from last season.
The Red Devils netted only five more goals than relegated Luton Town, highlighting the need for improvement before facing Liverpool next weekend.
United have missed several chances in their three games so far, with Erik ten Hag forced to play without a recognized forward due to an injury suffered by Rasmus Hojlund in pre-season.
Last season, the manager heavily relied on Hojlund, affecting his form, and will be cautious not to make the same mistake with new signing Joshua Zirkzee.
Striker shortage
There have been rumors that INEOS could make last-minute additions up front due to the lack of out-and-out strikers in the squad.
Netherlands international Hojlund describes himself as a mix of a No 9 and an attacking midfielder, as seen in the Fulham match.
The team currently lacks a poacher profile, leading to links with Ivan Toney of Brentford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton.
Toney is rumored to be heading to Saudi Arabia, with ongoing links to Chelsea, but United may be hesitant to meet his salary demands and a high transfer fee.
Everton contract rebel
Everton’s Calvert-Lewin is refusing to sign a new deal, making him a more affordable option with his contract expiring in 2025, attracting interest from Newcastle United and Manchester United.
Football Insider reports that both clubs are considering a late move for the England international, who can negotiate a pre-contract agreement from January.
“Newcastle United and Man United are among the clubs considering a late swoop for Everton contract rebel Dominic Calvert-Lewin, sources have told Football Insider.
“The Toffees have seen multiple contract renewal offers rejected by their 27-year-old talisman. His current deal is set to expire in less than 12 months and he can pen a pre-contract agreement in January, meaning this month could be the last chance to bank a fee for the striker.
“Sources say the Merseysiders will now be forced to reevaluate their demands with Calvert-Lewin rejecting contract offers and with financial uncertainty still lingering.”
Calvert-Lewin late move
Newcastle failed to meet Everton’s asking price of £40 million, but the price is expected to decrease.
Calvert-Lewin, who scored eight goals in 38 games last season, has a market value of €22 million as per Transfermarkt.
While Calvert-Lewin would provide a different attacking option, it remains to be seen if United have the funds after recent signings, including Manuel Ugarte.
Dealing with Everton has proven difficult in the past, and Newcastle may have a better chance at securing the striker at this stage of the transfer window.
