Interview: Azana Baines on why she is ready to represent the United States at the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup

The 2024 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup is set to kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Azana Baines, representing the United States, took some time before the tournament to chat with Swish Appeal about her thoughts on the event and 3×3 basketball as a whole. Baines recently wrapped up her college basketball career, playing for Seton Hall after stints at Virginia Tech and Duke.

During the interview, Baines shared insights on how her basketball skills were shaped by playing with men despite being surrounded by women at home, her close relationship with her twin sister, and her experiences in her first professional season in Spain. Some of the highlights from the conversation include:

On her journey playing basketball with male players:

Growing up as a female baller in a male-dominated environment, earning respect was key. Once I gained their respect, everything fell into place. The guys would always pick me first to join their games, recognizing my talent. This boosted my confidence on the court, as men naturally exude confidence and pride in sports. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors guide me from middle school to college, each helping me progress to the next level.

On her experiences in 3×3 basketball:

I find 3×3 basketball to be a unique game in its own right, distinct from traditional 5×5 play. It has a street ball vibe, reminiscent of my games with guys outdoors. Initially, I wasn’t aware of 3×3 basketball until the USA Federation invited Seton Hall to participate in a tournament. After performing well, I was asked to join an official training camp, leading to my participation in various tournaments including in Chile, Canada, Hungary, and Mongolia, where I’m playing for the second time.

A special shoutout to Lorenzo Gallotti of Two Points agency for coordinating the interview.
