The Marlins have sent outfielder Cristian Pache outright to Triple-A Jacksonville, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Pache was designated for assignment by Miami yesterday to make room for Dane Myers, who returned from the injured list.
Miami claimed Pache off waivers from the Orioles shortly after the trade deadline. Known for his defensive abilities, Pache played in 35 games for the Marlins but struggled offensively, posting a .183/.234/.283 batting line in 64 plate appearances. Throughout his career, spanning five seasons and 251 games, he has a batting line of .181/.243/.275.
Now 25 years old, Pache has played for five different MLB teams but has yet to find success at the plate. Despite being highly regarded for his defense, particularly as a center fielder, his offensive performance has limited him to a role as a fifth outfielder.
This marks the fourth time Pache has been removed from a roster, but the first time he has gone unclaimed on waivers. With over three years of MLB service, he has the option to elect free agency, although he will qualify for minor league free agency at the end of the season regardless. If the Marlins do not recall him in the coming days, he will become a free agent.
At this point, Pache will likely receive minor league offers, as he is out of options. Teams interested in signing him to a big league deal would need to keep him on the MLB roster or risk putting him back on waivers. Despite his struggles at the plate, his defensive skills and former prospect status make him an intriguing option as a non-roster depth player.
