The Jets’ surprising decision to terminate head coach Robert Saleh has left Bill Belichick puzzled.
Belichick expressed his confusion over the Jets’ dismissal of their fourth-year head coach during an appearance on “A Coach’s Perspective.”
“It is a bit perplexing,” Belichick said. “Everyone needs to move forward. The owner has the right to make that decision, and that’s what he chose to do. However, there have been several confusing aspects. It hasn’t been a great season for the Jets. You can sense some tension.”
Jets owner Woody Johnson had previously confirmed that he made the call to fire Saleh.
Saleh was let go after just five games in 2024, following disappointing losses to the Broncos at home and Vikings in London after a promising 2-1 start.
The Post’s Brian Costello reported that it was the 10-9 defeat to Denver that triggered Johnson’s decision, and he was not satisfied when Saleh requested patience.
One week later, following another loss, Saleh paid the price.
Belichick has had a complicated history with the Jets, notably resigning from the team shortly after accepting the head coaching position in 2000.
He famously wrote his resignation on a napkin, citing uncertainty with ownership as a key reason for his sudden departure just days after joining the team.
Belichick continued to highlight the issues with Saleh as the coach, pointing to problems with the offensive line and the overall instability within the Jets organization as the main causes of their struggles.
“There have been some problems on the offensive line, particularly with [Mekhi] Becton. The protection hasn’t been great, and Rodgers had a tough day in London,” Belichick remarked.
“While the defense has been solid, the appearance of dysfunctionality within the organization, whether it’s ownership, personnel, or coaching, has been tough to ignore. It just hasn’t been a good look.”
Saleh has been replaced by defensive coordinator and former player Jeff Ulbrich.
Offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett has been relieved of play-calling duties in favor of Todd Downing, but will remain with the team.
