When exploring the Underdark of Baldur’s Gate 3, you will come across Sovereign Spaw, the leader of the Myconids, and Sovereign Glut, a ruler with no subjects. You must make a choice between these two characters and ally with one of them.
Both NPCs present choices and consequences based on your decisions. It’s important to carefully consider these options, as you will not be able to revisit the Underdark as you progress towards Moonrise Tower and Act Two. Ensure that you align yourself with one of them before moving on. But which of the two is the better option? Should you side with Sovereign Glut or Sovereign Spaw in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Sovereign Spaw versus Sovereign Glut in Baldur’s Gate 3 explained
Your first encounter with Sovereign Spaw occurs when you enter the Myconid Circle in the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3. Spaw informs you that his circle needs protection from the Duergars outside the village, and you may later use their boat to reach the next location.
If you accept the quest, you can leave the village to deal with the Duergars, or if you have already done so, you can receive a reward for your efforts. Following this initial meeting, Sovereign Glut appears and recounts how the Duergars destroyed his circle, and he is unwelcome in the current circle.
Regardless of your actions regarding the Duergars, Glut offers to help you confront them. He reveals his plan for defeating Sovereign Spaw and taking over as the Circle’s Sovereign. Both choices have benefits and consequences, along with unique rewards depending on your alliance in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What happens if you side with Sovereign Glut and kill Sovereign Spaw in Baldur’s Gate 3?
After dealing with the Duergars and assisting Sovereign Glut in his quest for vengeance in “Avenge the Sovereign”, you have the option to return to Spaw and eliminate the Myconid or face death at his hands.
Choosing to go back to Spaw and kill him also requires you to eliminate the entire Colony. While saying “kill everyone in the Colony” may sound simple, it can be quite challenging in reality. Prepare yourself at your camp before engaging in this risky battle.
Choosing to side with Sovereign Glut grants you three items. You receive the Featherlight Boots, which increase movement speed when your Hit Points are below 50 percent. You also get the Winter’s Clutches gloves, allowing you to inflict two turns of Encrusted with Frost when dealing cold damage. Lastly, you receive the Ring of Fire, adding one Fire damage to your Fire-damage actions as a reward for your decision in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What happens if you side with Sovereign Spaw and kill Sovereign Glut?
During the dialogue, you can inform Sovereign Glut that you do not wish to be part of his schemes or that you are willing to engage in a dramatic battle if he desires bloodshed. Regardless of your response, you will engage in combat with him alongside your Baldur’s Gate 3 party.
If you choose to confront Sovereign Glut, take advantage of fire-based attacks, as he is vulnerable to fire in all its forms.
After defeating Glut, you can loot his body for items such as Scrolls of Blur and Hold Person, Hastening Spores, Lump of Myconid Flesh, Bonecap, Nightlight Frond, Poison Spores, and Rogue’s Morsel. His demise also concludes his quest, with no rewards as promised.
Upon returning to Spaw, he reveals a secret room filled with treasures like Gold, Wood Bark, Scrolls, Blushcap Mushrooms, and the Shadow of Menzoberranzan. This rare helmet offers the “Shrouded in Shadow” action, allowing you to turn invisible once per long rest. Additionally, Spaw bestows upon you the title of Kin Spirit.
Should you side with Sovereign Spaw or Sovereign Glut in Baldur’s Gate 3?
While understanding Glut’s resentment towards Spaw for failing to assist when his people were at risk, aligning with Spaw provides several exclusive items and the Shadow of Menzoberranzan, making it the optimal choice for rewards. However, if you enjoy a compelling villain narrative, you might prefer to ally with Sovereign Glut.
All rewards for siding with Sovereign Glut:
Winter’s Clutches, Featherlight Boots, Ring of Fire
All rewards for siding with Sovereign Spaw:
Gold, Consumables, Scrolls, Shadow of Menzoberranzan
Does choosing either Sovereign Glut or Sovereign Spaw impact the overall story in Baldur’s Gate 3?
There are no significant long-term consequences based on which side you choose in your Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough. You can select the rewards that appeal to you most and disregard the rest. However, both Glut and Spaw task you with hunting down Nere, the leader of the Duegars, and bringing his head to them. Completing this task could earn you an additional reward for demonstrating loyalty to these characters as you progress through Act One in Baldur’s Gate 3.
