It is undeniable that the National Women’s Soccer League exhibits a level of parity that is not seen in other major leagues worldwide. The Chicago Red Stars, who finished at the bottom of the table just a year ago, are now on their way back to the playoffs. On the contrary, the Seattle Reign, who played in the NWSL Championship last November, have been eliminated from this postseason even before playing their final two matches.
Recently, the Houston Dash defeated the San Diego Wave, a team with a stronger record than their standing might suggest, with a 2-0 victory. The last-place Dash also secured a 3-0 win against the fifth-place North Carolina Courage back in May. Such surprising outcomes are rare in other leagues.
The 2024 season in the NWSL has seen a significant shift in dynamics with a clear top four clubs emerging – Orlando Pride, Washington Spirit, Gotham FC, and Kansas City Current. These teams have set themselves apart from the rest of the league in a manner previously unseen.
In the previous season, only 13 points separated the first-place team from the 12th-place team. Contrastingly, this season, the disparity is larger with a 35-point gap between first-place Orlando Pride and 12th-place San Diego. The difference expands to 37 points when factoring in the 13th-place San Diego and last-place Houston. This significant imbalance was not present in the previous year.
The 2024 campaign has raised questions about whether this level of stratification will become the new norm or if it is just a temporary anomaly. The unique characteristics of this season and the reasons behind them will be explored to understand why the league might shift its dynamics in the upcoming years.
