The fighting system in Sparking Zero may seem simple at first, but it offers a lot of depth for players to explore. You can start with basic combos and progress to using more advanced techniques like afterimage strikes, chain combos, counters, dodges, and super attacks.
Sparking Zero doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to gameplay. While you receive a brief tutorial at the beginning of the game, you are mostly left to figure things out on your own unless you dive into the training mode (which is highly recommended). The Episode Battles, which serve as the game’s “story mode,” quickly throw you into the action.
However, calling it a “story mode” might be a bit misleading in the case of Sparking Zero. Unlike previous Tenkaichi titles that extensively retold Dragon Ball’s story, Sparking Zero provides only the essentials. It assumes that players are already familiar with both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super.
This approach by Bandai Namco Games and Spike Chunsoft is understandable. The Episode Battles allow you to explore the stories of eight different fighters and experience their journeys.
