The Washington Mystics’ season ended over one month ago, after starting the season 0-12 and just missing out on the playoffs following a 6-4 finishing stretch.
On Tuesday, Monumental Basketball announced the mutual parting of ways with general manager Mike Thibault and head coach Eric Thibault, citing the team’s in-season progress.
Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger stated:
After extensive reflection and conversation, we have decided to turn the team over to new leadership with a renewed vision for the future of WNBA basketball.
He also expressed appreciation for the Thibaults, mentioning their contributions to the Mystics franchise.
Coach Mike elevated the Mystics program to a league leader in innovation and player care, while Coach Eric displayed skill and talent in coaching the team.
Mike Thibault had been with the Mystics since before the 2013 season, leading the team to a WNBA championship in 2019. After stepping down as head coach before the 2023 season, he focused on his general manager role. Eric took over as head coach, having served as an assistant since 2013.
With the departure of Eric Thibault, the Mystics are now in search of a new head coach, joining other WNBA teams like the Sparks, Sky, Dream and Wings in the search for new leadership. They are also in need of a new general manager.
