Ilia Topuria strongly disagrees with Max Holloway’s self-proclamation as the best boxer in the UFC.
“El Matador” is set to defend his featherweight title for the first time against Holloway this weekend in the main event of UFC 308 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The buildup to this highly anticipated fight has been filled with fiery exchanges between Topuria and Holloway in interviews and on social media. The focus has primarily been on the debate over who is the better fighter, with the unbeaten Georgian-Spaniard expressing his desire to be the first to knock out “Blessed” in the cage.
During the media day before UFC 308, “El Matador” was asked about Holloway’s repeated claims of being the “best boxer in the UFC,” a title the Hawaiian asserted after his dominant win over Calvin Kattar in January 2021.
Topuria quickly dismissed the current BMF champion’s statements, acknowledging Holloway’s striking skills and experience but remaining confident in his own abilities.
Topuria claimed the featherweight title in a shocking upset against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 earlier this year. He holds a perfect 7-0 record in the UFC, with five of those wins coming by stoppage.
On the other hand, “Blessed” is coming off a thrilling last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 in April, securing the BMF title. UFC 308 will be Holloway’s third shot at regaining the 145-pound belt. He has a 22-7 record in the Octagon, with 11 knockout victories.
