McLaren is challenging the penalty given to Lando Norris in Austin, aiming to have him reinstated to third place on the podium.
Norris was penalized for gaining an advantage by leaving the track while battling with Max Verstappen for third position. The stewards determined that Norris had lost the “right” to the corner when he overtook Verstappen on the outside but was not level with him at the apex. This led to a 5-second penalty being imposed.
Despite the penalty, the stewards clarified that it would not count as a track limit “strike” for Norris, which could have resulted in further penalties.
Arriving in Mexico, Norris expressed his disagreement with the penalty and highlighted similarities with another incident involving George and Bottas earlier in the race.
McLaren has initiated a right of review to challenge the penalty, presenting new evidence that was not available at the time of the initial decision. A hearing involving the COTA stewards and Red Bull is scheduled between Friday’s practice sessions.
If successful, Norris could be credited with third place, and Verstappen would drop to fourth in the final race standings.
