ABU DHABI – Dana White raised the question of how the UFC can say no to Alexander Volkanovski during the post-fight news conference at UFC 308 on Saturday at Etihad Arena.
White was referring to the next title challenger for UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who solidified his status with a huge knockout of Max Holloway in the main event.
After the fight, Volkanovski (26-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) entered the cage while UFC commentator Daniel Cormier interviewed Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC), a move that signifies the promotion’s potential future plans.
“Volkanovski is one of those fighters,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “We can’t turn down Volkanovski.”
The top featherweights previously met in February, with Topuria emerging victorious via knockout. Volkanovski has not competed since, and he is currently on a two-fight losing streak, including a knockout defeat in a lightweight title challenge against Islam Makhachev.
While other contenders like UFC 308 backup fighter Diego Lopes have entered the title conversation, White highlighted Volkanovski’s history as a reliable company man who has stepped up in tough situations.
“He has always been there for us when needed,” White said. “He has been on a run like Adesanya and like Alex Pereira. When things haven’t gone our way, Volkanovski has always stepped up. For him to request a rematch, it’s not a crazy idea. Who wouldn’t want to see it again?”
