Sean Strickland, the former middleweight champion, has been vocal about wanting a rematch with current titleholder Dricus du Plessis ever since their close fight at UFC 297 in January.
Despite his loss to du Plessis, Strickland bounced back with a split decision victory over Paulo Costa in June and immediately called for a rematch with the champion.
After du Plessis successfully defended his title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 in August, it seemed like Strickland would be next in line for a title shot. However, Khamzat Chimaev’s impressive win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 raised questions about who would get the next title opportunity.
Following his victory, Chimaev boldly called for a title shot, but Strickland made it clear that he believes he deserves the next chance at the belt. He even took a swipe at Chimaev in a social media post, mocking him for potential crypto scams.
“Understand one thing…. I am next in line….. Its been said, its been written… January/February me and @dricusduplessis are scrapping,” Strickland wrote on social media.
