The Mets have reached an agreement with right-hander Chris Devenski on a minor league deal, as reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com on X. Devenski, 34 years old in November, will also receive a camp invite and will be competing for a spot in next year’s spring training.
Devenski’s career has had its ups and downs, with a recent rough season behind him. After being released by the Angels, he signed a one-year deal with the Rays for $1.1MM last year. Despite a challenging 2024 season with the Rays, where he posted a 6.75 ERA in 26 2/3 innings, he showed promise with Triple-A Tacoma towards the end of the year.
With a strong showing in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Devenski finished the season with Tacoma posting a 2.35 ERA over 23 innings. The Mets may be intrigued by this performance, as well as his past success with the Astros in 2016 and 2017.
Devenski’s career has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency, but the Mets see no real risk in giving him a shot on a minor league deal. President of baseball operations David Stearns has been active in reshaping the bullpen, making moves to provide depth for next season.
