The No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2024 NBA draft squared off for the first time this season on Monday as Zaccharie Risacher’s Atlanta Hawks took on Alex Sarr’s Washington Wizards.
Sarr and the Wizards walked away with their first win of the season, beating the Hawks 121-119.
While it wasn’t the most memorable game from either rookie, Sarr slightly outplayed Risacher as he totaled seven points and nine rebounds compared to four points and three boards from Risacher.
Though both young players are still clearly finding their game offensively, their defensive upside was evident on Monday. Sarr had a steal and a pair of blocks while Risacher had two steals and swatted two shots.
Defense is a good place to start, as they should get more comfortable on offense as they progress naturally.
After the matchup, fans were somewhat disappointed by the rookie battle, though others noted the potential the two have.

Sarr-Risacher combining for 11 points in their first matchup really fits the whole narrative on this draft

It’s halftime in the battle of the #1 and #2 picks in the NBA Draft.So far…#1 – Zaccharie Risacher – 3 points#2 – Alex Sarr – 4 points
Sarr and Risacher have just a few games under their belts, so their slow starts are a bit expected. With last year’s top pick being Victor Wembanyama, Monday’s matchup was a good reminder that most rookies take a little bit of time before fully developing, especially two who aren’t even 20 years old yet.
As the season continues, both Sarr and Risacher will likely put together some big performances, but for now, they both have a ways to go.
