On Thursday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes confirmed that he is actively working to bring a WNBA team to Kansas City as part of the same ownership group that established the KC Current women’s soccer team. With the WNBA’s growing popularity, Mahomes sees this as a chance to strengthen basketball’s footprint in a city known for its passionate sports fanbase.
Previously, Mahomes had shown interest in bringing an NBA team to Kansas City and now points to the WNBA’s recent successes as additional motivation to establish a franchise in the city.
“Obviously, we want to get basketball to Kansas City in general, and [with] the WNBA and the success that they’ve had this last season, in these last few seasons, it’s kind of a no-brainer to try to get a WNBA team in Kansas City,” he stated. “The city is going to come out; they’re going to fill the stadium.
“It was cool that we were able to get this soccer team, this women’s soccer team here, the Current, and they’re going to the playoffs now, and you see the support that they have, and so let’s try to get a WNBA team in here as well.”
For Mahomes, this initiative holds personal significance, especially as a father. He and his wife, Brittany, are raising a daughter and have another one on the way.
“I want to show her that she can follow her dreams and make an impact in this world, in whatever that dream is,” he remarked.
His ongoing involvement in Kansas City’s sports scene reflects a deep-rooted love for the community.
“Kansas City is such a great place for me,” Mahomes shared, emphasizing his desire to give back to the city that he calls home. “I know how much the city loves sports, and so let’s bring as many sports in here and showcase how great Kansas City is, not only as a city but the people that are in the city as well.”
While the timeline for establishing a WNBA team remains unknown, Mahomes recognizes the need for strategic planning.
“You want to expand as fast as you can, but in a way that’s profitable for them and good for the players,” he explained.
Competing against other cities for a franchise, Mahomes is determined to do his part to demonstrate why Kansas City is an ideal location for the WNBA.
“The WNBA has really grown, and so we feel like Kansas City is a great place to continue that growth, but we have to battle with other cities to prove why we can sustain and have a great franchise here,” he explained.
Mahomes’ vision extends beyond his playing career; he hopes to stay involved in sports long after he retires from football. His aspirations in women’s sports are driven by a desire to provide equal resources and opportunities.
“As I’ve met players and women from other sports, including my wife, I’ve seen that they didn’t have some of the same resources and facilities that I had growing up,” Mahomes reflected. “I want to give them those same resources.
“You’ve seen it with the Current — whenever you give them the best of the best, they perform at an even higher level, and so I’m excited for the playoff run we’re about to have with the Current, and I want to continue to work in women’s sports as long as I can.”
