The Bucks are struggling at the start of this season, and there is speculation among NBA executives that the 2022 champions could face difficulties, potentially leading to Giannis Antetokounmpo becoming available for trade.
“Teams are keeping an eye on the situation and hoping for opportunities,” revealed a Western Conference team executive to CBS Sports.
A high-ranking executive from a team interested in acquiring the Greek Freak mentioned, “I wouldn’t be surprised if a trade goes through before the deadline.”
An executive from the Eastern Conference has heard rumors about Giannis possibly wanting to join either the Nets or the Heat.
Another potential destination mentioned is the Thunder, who have significant draft assets to offer in a trade deal.
“While the Thunder hasn’t been directly linked, Milwaukee might prioritize getting the best deal possible if Giannis expresses a desire to leave. Oklahoma City could provide a strong offer,” noted the Eastern Conference executive.
Another factor that could influence Giannis’s decision to leave is the increasing influence of Doc Rivers within the Bucks organization. Reports suggest that Rivers has gained the trust of the owner and now holds a key role in basketball-related decisions.
According to sources familiar with the Bucks’ front office, “The decision-making now relies on Doc; they plan to assess his preferences after 20 games. The situation appears to be chaotic.”
Giannis himself has added fuel to the fire by hinting at the possibility of being traded if the season does not go well.
During a conversation with a team staffer, he pondered, “If we fail to win this year, could I be let go? Is that a concern for you, like what if things go south this season? Yes, if we don’t secure a championship, I might be traded. That’s the nature of our profession. It’s the reality we face.”
