The NBA is exploring a new format for the February 2025 All-Star game in a bid to breathe life back into the event.
While fans have lost interest in the All-Star game itself, the league is still searching for ways to make it more exciting.
“We’re considering different formats for this year’s All-Star Game. It won’t be a traditional game format,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced on Saturday in Mexico City.
What changes can we expect at this year’s event in San Francisco? Silver has not disclosed details yet, but he hinted that Steph Curry may have some influence.
“We have been in discussions with Steph Curry. This is essentially a home game for him. He takes great pride in ensuring that players showcase their best performance, so we are exploring alternative formats,” Silver stated. “It is clear that both players and fans were disappointed with last year’s All-Star Game. We all strive to offer better competition and entertainment for our audience.”
The most memorable moment of last year’s All-Star Weekend was the 3-point shootout between Curry and WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu. Silver confirmed that this competition will return in some capacity.
“Sabrina Ionescu hails from the Bay Area. As mentioned, Steph will be participating, and although they haven’t officially committed yet, they know they will be partaking in the event again. They are eager to do so,” Silver revealed. “After last year’s competition, they immediately agreed that more rounds are needed to ensure fairness. Therefore, we will introduce additional activities.”
The NFL discontinued the Pro Bowl game due to the lack of competitiveness, with players expressing concerns about injuries in an exhibition match. The event now features skills competitions and flag football.
Although Silver appears determined to improve the All-Star Game, it continues to decline in quality.
