Rome, Ga. – In one of the final qualifying events for the upcoming NCAA Individual Championships, the opening day of the ITA Conference Masters Championships was full of excitement, and upsets, as representatives from across every NCAA Division I Conference made their way to Rome, Georgia to battle it out.
Featuring a 32-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw, players are competing for four (3) NCAA Singles Championship berths (semifinalists) and three (3) NCAA Doubles Championship berths (first, second, and third-place finishers).
With two rounds of singles play on the opening day, we saw a total of four seeded players fall across the men’s and women’s singles draw. Of these four players, one included the top seed in the women’s singles draw as San Diego’s Claudia De Las Heras fell to Sofia Maria Barbulescu (Richmond) in the round of sixteen. All three remaining seeds who fell on the opening day were all 5-8 seeds were representatives from the SEC, Big South, and Conference USA.
In doubles, all but one doubles team advanced past the opening round of play. In the only seeded upset of the day, Caitlyn Munson and Natalia Vela (Bryant) took down a seeded pairing from Tulsa in a third-set tiebreaker to keep their hopes alive for an NCAA Individual Championship birth.
