Pewter Report’s Matt Matera appeared on WFLA with sports anchor Dan Lucas from WFLA News Channel 8 to analyze the Bucs as they enjoy a break during their bye week.
The Bucs currently hold a 4-6 record this season and face a challenging path to the postseason. However, they have a favorable schedule ahead that could potentially allow them to make a strong playoff push. The team may need to win 6 out of their remaining 7 games or even go undefeated to secure a playoff spot.
Bucs Offense Shows Consistent Scoring
Matera and Lucas highlighted the commendable performance of the Bucs offense, especially with offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s efforts to maintain scoring despite injuries to key players like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Even without their top receivers, the offense managed to maintain a respectable average of 24 points in the past two games, down from their 30-point average with Evans and Godwin.
While the most recent game saw a lower scoring output of 20 points, Coen’s ability to find consistency within the team, utilize tight end Cade Otton effectively, and maintain the offensive strength is impressive. Additionally, the imminent return of Evans will further boost the team’s offensive capabilities.
However, the primary reason for the Bucs’ success lies with quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has consistently demonstrated leadership and determination, proving his worth as a crucial player for the team.
Addressing Defensive Issues
Discussion about the Bucs’ defense centered around various concerns, including their low ranking in yards allowed per game. Assignments, player positioning, and communication were identified as key areas that need improvement.
Issues with players’ coverage strategies, such as K.J. Britt in zone coverage and cornerbacks playing too far back, were noted as areas needing adjustment. The pass rush, particularly from the edge, has been lacking despite strong performances from some players like Vita Vea.
The potential for defensive improvement post-bye week, the role of defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, and the team’s chances of making a successful run were also discussed.
