Paige Bueckers being projected as the number one pick in the 2025 WNBA draft is not a new development, with all teams keeping a close eye on her. However, during the recent WNBA draft lottery, the Dallas Wings secured the top spot, potentially preventing the expansion franchise Golden State Valkyries from acquiring the NCAA’s NPOY contender. Despite concerns about their lack of experience against established teams, the Valkyries seem to have a plan for their future.
On a recent episode of The Pick Up, Cathryn Naiker and Freddie Rivas discussed potential alternatives for the Valkyries to build a strong lineup.
“Yeah, I think Kate Martin’s gonna become a Valkyrie,” Naiker suggested, with Rivas agreeing and adding, “She might… she might. Kate Martin’s a great example of being done being just okay.”

“Yeah, you’re young. You’re good. You don’t get enough minutes. Let’s go,” Naiker emphasized. “It’s gonna be a team of super appreciative players,” Rivas elaborated.
Following the recent WNBA draft lottery, which saw the Dallas Wings secure the top pick, other teams like the LA Sparks, Chicago Sky, and Washington Mystics also got top spots. The Valkyries will have the fifth pick in each round, making it challenging to land Bueckers but potentially a good opportunity to pick Martin.
Despite her modest performance with the Las Vegas Aces in the previous W draft, Martin’s popularity among fans and her selection for the Unrivaled league showcase her potential. With Megan Gustafson’s return creating competition, the Valkyries may consider Martin for her fan base and talent.
The Valkyries have appointed Natalie Nakase, former assistant coach of the Las Vegas Aces, as their head coach, bringing valuable experience to the team. With the guidance of Nakase, the Valkyries aim to build a strong team despite missing out on recruiting Bueckers.
