GAMBIER, Ohio — Despite a promising start, the Kenyon women’s basketball team (1-5) fell to Marietta College (4-1) after the Pioneers mounted a decisive second-quarter run that proved to be the difference-maker in Wednesday’s non-conference matchup. This game was a true challenge for the Owls, as Marietta College made the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament last season.
The Owls showed early promise, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead behind a strong post move from Anissa Hardy and a banked three-pointer from junior Alyssa Gest following a defensive steal. The opening quarter featured efficient shooting from Kenyon, who connected on 50% of their field goals (7-14) and showed particular accuracy from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-5 attempts.
Gest provided an early spark for the Owls, contributing five first-quarter points including a skillful reverse layup that broke a 5-5 tie. The team’s ball movement was particularly sharp in the opening frame, recording four assists and finding open shooters with consistency. Alyssa Horsely, a first-year standout from Asheville, Ohio, capitalized on excellent off-ball movement, losing her defender off a double screen to drain a three-pointer that put Kenyon ahead 10-9.
The Owls maintained their momentum through the remainder of the first quarter, highlighted by Hardy’s additional post score and a precision cross-court pass to find Gest for another three-pointer. First-year guard Kiana Mallabasy added to the offensive output with a challenging mid-range jumper despite tight defensive pressure. When the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, Kenyon held a 17-14 advantage.
However, the complexion of the game changed dramatically in the second quarter as Marietta implemented an aggressive full-court press that disrupted the Owls’ offensive rhythm. The defensive adjustment proved highly effective, forcing multiple Kenyon turnovers that Marietta converted into transition points. The visitors outscored Kenyon 23-6 in the period, with the Owls’ only points coming from three-pointers by Mallabasy and Katherine Organ. The pressure defense sparked a decisive run that put Marietta ahead 26-17, a lead they would not relinquish.
Despite defensive highlights in the second half, including a well-timed charge taken by Susannah Zimmerman at the start of the fourth quarter, Kenyon was unable to recreate the offensive efficiency they showed in the opening period. Marietta maintained control throughout the final two quarters, building upon their second-quarter momentum to secure the victory.
Alyssa Gest led the Owls with 12 points on 5-11 shooting, including 2-6 from three. She was followed by Hardy and Mollabashy who chipped in six points apiece.
The loss drops Kenyon to 1-5 on the season, while Marietta improves to 4-1. The Owls will look to recapture their early-game form against a familiar foe, taking on Wittenberg University on December 5 for the North Coast Athletic Conference opener.
