Geraint Thomas is set to kick off his 16th season with Ineos Grenadiers at the 2025 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Australia from January 21-26. This will be his tenth appearance at the event, which he describes as “familiar” and where he has always received a warm reception.
“I have always enjoyed coming to South Australia and the warm welcome from fans. Starting the season at an event I am familiar with is a great advantage,” Thomas stated in a press release from the Tour Down Under organizers.
Throughout his more than two-decade career, Thomas has achieved many successes with Team Sky and now Ineos Grenadiers. This includes winning the 2018 Tour de France and finishing second and third at the Tour de France in 2019 and 2022. He also secured second and third places at the Giro d’Italia in 2023 and 2024.
Although Thomas’ contract with Ineos Grenadiers ends in 2025, he has not confirmed his retirement plans. However, during an interview with BBC Radio 4, he hinted that this could be his last season.
Thomas’ best result at the Santos Tour Down Under was third overall in 2013, where he also won stage 2 in Rostrevor and the overall points classification.
As the first confirmed rider for the 2025 edition, Thomas will bring his experience to the six-day race, culminating in a circuit finish in Adelaide. The penultimate stage, finishing at Willunga Hill, will likely be crucial in determining the final standings.
“Geraint Thomas is a familiar face at the Santos Tour Down Under and brings a wealth of experience each time he competes here,” said Stuart O’Grady, the event’s race director.
“We know there will be plenty of fans eager to see the star rider in action, and we are confident he will deliver a strong performance.”
