This Philadelphia Eagles defensive performance stood out this season for me as they faced a strong offense in the Los Angeles Rams, led by coach Sean McVay. Despite the Rams scoring 20 points, the defense dominated the game. Some questionable pass interference calls and a late touchdown marred an otherwise dominant display. Let’s dive into the details. (Previously: Eagles-Rams offensive film review.)
Defense
Initially, the Rams found success in the game but the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, Fangio, made quick and effective adjustments by employing 5-man fronts on early downs to stifle the Rams’ running game. Brandon Graham had a standout game, showcasing his versatility by moving inside, adding an element of unpredictability to the Eagles’ defensive fronts. Isaiah Rodgers made a crucial play by forcing a fumble. The Eagles’ defensive backs contributed significantly, especially in run defense.
Eagles Defense All22 vs. Rams. 1) The thing I enjoyed the most was how quickly Fangio adjusted. The Rams had a few good runs on the first drive and the Eagles instantly went to their 5-man front with Baun dropping down to EDGE and BG kicking inside. This is a fantastic play by… pic.twitter.com/pCAKdfBdQg

Quinyon Mitchell’s coverage against Puka Nacua was commendable despite being beaten on the play. Jalen Carter’s impact in drawing double-teams was evident, while Jordan Davis struggled as a pass rusher. The Eagles’ defensive strategy and route distribution were impressive, reflecting Fangio’s prowess in coaching the secondary.
2) This is the perfect call by the Rams against this coverage. Puka Nacua has great leverage against Quinyon Mitchell and he still only just beats him. That’s the sign of an outstanding cornerback. Quinyon can’t cover this a lot better. Also, I would love Jordan Davis to be able… pic.twitter.com/YscRr89uus

A positive highlight was Ed Reed Blankenship’s defensive prowess in playing the ‘robber’ role effectively. Nakobe Dean’s all-around performance showcased his improvement and trust in instincts, highlighting Fangio’s impactful personnel decisions. Cooper DeJean’s emergence has bolstered the defense significantly, making an impact in both run defense and coverage.
3) Josh Sweat kicks inside here & Baun lines up at EDGE. This is interesting. We might see this more as BG is the one who usually does this.
I think the Eagles route distribution and coverage here is outstanding. It was for most of the game. I don’t agree with the PI call and… pic.twitter.com/SBgtUVGJ93

As the season progresses, Brandon Graham’s absence will be felt, with the Eagles needing to find a replacement for his role. The defense’s performance and versatility will be key moving forward, especially in utilizing 5-man fronts effectively.
7) I’m not sure I’m ready to talk about BG yet…
I started watching the NFL in 2009. BG was drafted in 2010. I can’t really imagine a defense without BG. He’s going to be a massive miss because he’s been exceptional the past month. The Eagles are going to need others to step up… pic.twitter.com/VL3QqsjxRc
