Paris was shocked by a tragic incident that occurred just a few yards from La Madeleine, a landmark church, in which a cyclist was crushed under the wheels of an SUV in a bike lane. Prosecutors believe it was a deliberate act of road rage.
A murder investigation has been launched, and Mayor Anne Hidalgo led a minute of silence for the victim, Paul Varry, a 27-year-old cycling advocate. In an emotional speech, Mayor Hidalgo reaffirmed her commitment to reducing the dominance of cars in Parisian life.
“I am truly angry,” she stated. “The future does not belong to cars.”
The tragic death of Mr. Varry has brought attention to the risks faced by cyclists in a city that has seen a growth in cycling infrastructure. It has also highlighted the tensions between cyclists and motorists in a city where car movement and parking options are increasingly restricted.
