Houston’s Azeez Al-Shaair has been suspended by the NFL for three games without pay due to repeated violations of player safety rules following a violent hit to the head of Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, resulting in a concussion.
Announced by NFL VP of Football Operations Jon Runyan, Al-Shaair’s suspension comes after multiple offenses for personal fouls and sportsmanship-related violations in recent seasons.
During Houston’s victory over Jacksonville, Al-Shaair struck Lawrence in the head/neck area as Lawrence slid feet-first, a hit that Runyan deemed “unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules” in his letter to Al-Shaair.
Al-Shaair is appealing the suspension, with general manager Nick Caserio questioning the consistency of the league’s punishment decisions.
If upheld, Al-Shaair will miss three games and won’t return until after Houston’s Christmas Day game. The suspension will cost him about $265,000.
After the hit, Lawrence showed signs of a traumatic brain injury, leading to a brawl on the field involving Al-Shaair and others.
Runyan outlined Al-Shaair’s behavior post-hit, citing his lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game in announcing the suspension.
This is Al-Shaair’s third punishment this season, with previous fines for late hits and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Caserio defended Al-Shaair against claims of intentional harm, emphasizing player safety and well-being as a priority.
Al-Shaair apologized to Lawrence in a public statement, expressing remorse for the hit that led to the suspension.
