INDIANAPOLIS – Whitman College senior forward Korin Baker has been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the period ending December 1.
The weekly national award was the first for a Blues player since Casey Poe in 2018.
Baker, a 6-0 fifth-year forward from Wauconda, Wash., helped lead No. 14/15 (D3hoops.com, WBCA) to a pair of victories at the UC Santa Cruz Thanksgiving Classic where she was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Player. She played only 18 minutes in Friday’s 94-61 win over La Verne, but still compiled 31 points (13-of-17 FG, 5-of-9 FT), 10 rebounds, an assist, steal, and block. The next day, Baker finished with 22 points (9-of-13 FG, 4-of-6 FT), eight rebounds, two assists, and a block in the Blues’ 73-50 victory over Cal Lutheran. For the week, she averaged 26.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the foul line. For her efforts, Baker was also named the Northwest Conference Player of the Week.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
