Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has disclosed that he and new head coach Ruben Amorim have the same football philosophy, which has helped them bond.
Amorim was named United manager last month after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese coach has managed four games in the Premier League and Europa League, winning two, drawing one, and losing one.
Martinez has been a regular in United’s three-man defense under Amorim. The Argentina international was notably absent in the mid-week defeat to Arsenal.
Since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2022, Martinez has endeared himself to fans with his no-nonsense style and relentless attitude.
In an interview with club media, Martinez shared that these qualities have helped him connect with Amorim, who shares similar attributes.
“It’s the way I like to play, the style of football: the passion, the energy.”
“If you have that in common with me, you connect quickly. He has many great qualities. He meets the club’s expectations, which is positive.”
“I appreciate his passion, his energy, his approach to playing – both in possession and defense. He’s good – and the energy from the staff has been great too.”
Regarding Amorim’s preference for three central defenders and wing-backs, Martinez commented, “We start with three at the back but switch formations based on the game’s dynamics.”
“Sometimes we have four at the back or five, depending on the situation. But I enjoy it.”
“I like the intensity and energy. I appreciate how he wants us to play in possession and out of possession. I feel comfortable in this system.”
United will face Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford later today, with kick-off at 17:30 GMT.
