Despite some glimpses of hope, C.J. Mosley’s return this season seemed unlikely. He participated in light tackling drills after the Jets’ bye week, was progressing positively, and even had a full practice leading up to Week 14 against the Dolphins.
However, any hopes of his return were dashed when interim Jets head coach Jeff Ulbrich announced that Mosley would be placed on injured reserve due to a herniated disc in his neck, effectively ending his season.
Although he would be eligible to return for their Week 18 game against the Dolphins after missing the required four games on IR, it seems improbable. With a hefty cap hit of $12.784 million next season, there are doubts about his future with the team.
Ulbrich described the decision as difficult but necessary for Mosley and the organization. Mosley, who had already missed three games earlier in the season due to a toe injury, suffered a setback before the game against the Patriots on Oct. 27.
Despite hopes of returning from his injury without surgery, Mosley was unable to recover fully for a comeback. His 2024 season ends with 17 total tackles, his lowest since 2019.
Mosley, a vital part of the Jets’ defense, signed with the team in 2019 and became a defensive leader. He returned to action in 2021 after opting out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic.
An integral part of the Jets’ defense, Mosley provided stability and veteran leadership in the locker room during challenging times for the team. His contributions were recognized, and he strived to lead the team to success despite setbacks.
The Jets have a potential successor in Jamien Sherwood, who has filled in for Mosley and led the team in tackles this season. However, Mosley’s absence will be felt as the team faces uncertain times ahead.
