WNBA: In WNBL, wins aren’t easy to come by for some W stars

The WNBL-leading Bendigo Spirit is not only focused on their incredible present but also looking back at their illustrious past, aiming to honor a team legend. On the other hand, the Perth Lynx, just one defeat behind the Spirit in the standings, have suffered two consecutive losses. In contrast, the league’s bottom two teams, the Adelaide Lightning and the Canberra Capitals, are facing their own challenges, with the Lightning seeking change to address their issues.

Here are the latest developments in the WNBL:

Adelaide Lightning and Head Coach Split Ways

Natalie Hurst, who served as the head coach for the Adelaide Lightning since last season, has mutually agreed to part ways with the team. Following Hurst’s departure, the Lightning showcased a promising win against the Southside Flyers, but they faced a defeat against league newcomers Geelong United shortly after.

Despite possessing talent that can compete at a higher level, the Lightning have underperformed with just two wins in eight games. Players like Stephanie Talbot, Japreece Dean, and Brianna Turner have shown impressive stats, but the team lacks consistency, resulting in multiple losses. The appointment of former assistant coach Matthew Clarke as the new head coach raises hopes for a turnaround.

Bendigo Spirit to Retire First Jersey

The Bendigo Spirit, currently unbeaten and dominating the competition, have announced the retirement of their first jersey, No. 20, which belonged to Gabe Richards—a player who won championships with the Spirit, appeared in two WNBL All-Star Games, and represented the national team.

Richards, who started her pro career with the Spirit in 2007 and retired in 2020, will have her number retired before the Spirit’s next home game against the Townsville Fire on Dec. 14. Kelly Wilson, another key player for the Spirit, is next in line for jersey retirement, showcasing her enduring impact and contributions to the team.

Current League Standings

1. Bendigo Spirit (8-0)

2. Perth Lynx (6-3)

3. Townsville Fire (4-3)

4. Sydney Flames (3-4)

5. Geelong United (3-4)

6. Southside Flyers (3-5)

7. Adelaide Lightning (2-6)

8. Canberra Capitals (2-6)
