Among all the upgrades for PS5 Pro that have been tested so far, the Resident Evil series has seen some of the biggest improvements on Sony’s new hardware. The games that have benefited from these upgrades include Resident Evil 7 from 2017, the remakes of RE 2 and 3, Resident Evil Village, and most recently, Resident Evil 4 Remake. All these games are powered by Capcom’s RE Engine and run as native PS5 apps. However, there have been limitations in performance on the base PS5, such as not being able to fully utilize features like RT at 60fps or enabling a 120Hz HFR mode. PS5 Pro addresses these issues with its increased GPU power and advanced PSSR upscaling, bridging the gap to achieve the desired frame-rate targets.
Out of these five games, only Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village have been updated with Pro support. The other three games still see a performance boost on PS5 Pro, but the features and visual settings remain the same as on the standard PS5. For RE4 Remake and Village, there is a new 120Hz toggle available exclusively on the Pro version. Resident Evil Village, in particular, benefits from PSSR upscaling, maintaining a fixed 1536×864 resolution reconstructed to 4K using PSSR in every mode. This results in a stable visual experience, although there are some trade-offs compared to the base PS5’s 4K checkerboarding.
Resident Evil 4 Remake also shows significant performance gains on PS5 Pro, with the ability to maintain 60fps in the resolution mode with RT enabled. PS5 Pro users can enjoy better frame rates compared to base PS5 and have the option to run RT in combination with higher frame rates. The other three RE Engine releases, RE7 and the remakes of RE2 and RE3, do not have an official PS5 Pro upgrade yet, but they still benefit from the increased GPU power, especially when using RT features.
Overall, PS5 Pro has addressed performance issues in the Resident Evil series, providing a more stable frame rate and enhanced visual experience. While there may be limitations in terms of visual improvements beyond frame rate boosts, the upgrades on PS5 Pro have been successful in improving the overall gameplay experience for these iconic games.
