After being absent in the Jets’ Week 14 match against the Dolphins due to a knee injury, Breece Hall might make a comeback in the backfield for the game against the Jaguars on Sunday.
Following Friday’s practice, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich expressed optimism that the star running back could play on Sunday despite being listed as questionable on the injury report.
The third-year running back missed his first game of the season due to a left knee injury, which is the same knee he tore his ACL on in 2022.
In his absence, rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis stepped up, combining for 83 yards and one touchdown from Davis.
Hall did not participate in practice on Wednesday or Thursday but was a full participant on Friday.
“He looks good right now, so it’s promising,” Ulbrich said. “It says questionable, but we’re hopeful and we’ll see how it goes.”
The 2022 No. 36 overall pick sustained the injury during the Jets’ 28-27 loss to the Colts in Week 13.
He played in the subsequent game after the Jets’ bye week against the Seahawks, recording 60 yards on 12 carries.
Hall has rushed for 692 yards and scored four touchdowns this season, along with 401 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Mac Jones will lead the Jaguars against the Jets for the sixth time on Sunday, maintaining a perfect 5-0 record against the struggling team.
The Jets are hoping to secure a win against the second-string quarterback, who is filling in for Trevor Lawrence.
“He’s a similar player obviously. Schematically, they do a few things differently,” Ulbrich said. “He has great vision on the field and always has. He excels in seeing coverage, problem-solving, and making the right decisions, so he will pose a challenge. Additionally, Mac Jones is underrated for his mobility.
“While he may not be as agile as Michael Vick, his legs consistently extend plays and gain yards. You have to be prepared for his mobility in both aspects.”
CB Brandin Echols (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday, while CB D.J. Reed (groin) is doubtful.
Reed did not practice on Thursday or Friday and was limited on Wednesday.
If both Echols and Reed are unavailable on Sunday, Ulbrich mentioned that rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers will see more playing time.
“I’m eager to see how he performs. If he gets the chance to play, I am excited about his potential,” Ulbrich said. “He has shown significant growth this season and possesses exceptional ball skills. So, if Qwan’tez Stiggers has to step up, we are looking forward to that opportunity for him and for us.”
RB Kene Nwangwu (hand) has been ruled out for the Jaguars game, and OL Xavier Newman (groin) is doubtful.
Offensive linemen Moses Morgan (wrist) and Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) are both listed as questionable.
