Sue Bird was informed about Brittney Griner’s legal troubles in Russia in an unexpected location.
In February 2022, Russian authorities apprehended Brittney Griner at an airport for carrying vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage. The WNBA player, who was en route to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia, was held captive for 10 months before being released in a prisoner exchange and returning to the United States.
Bird, along with other WNBA players, advocated for Griner’s release. During a recent interview on Pablo Torre Finds Out, the retired legend shared that she learned about Griner’s situation from her former Seattle Storm teammate Breanna Stewart during a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue photoshoot.
“I remember Breanna Stewart was also present,” Bird recalled. “At one point, she whispered to me, ‘Hey, I think something happened with BG in Russia.'”
