The Butler women’s basketball team took a 66-43 loss at DePaul on Saturday afternoon to move their overall record to 10-4. With the win DePaul improves to 6-8.
DePaul limited Butler to nine points in the second quarter and just five in the third to build their lead. Taylor Johnson-Matthews, Jorie Allen and Meg Newman all scored in double figures for the Blue Demons. Meanwhile, BU only managed to shoot 33 percent from the field and 16 percent from behind the arc.
Butler opened the game by making their first five shots. Kilyn McGuff and Cristen Carter each had two field goals before a Riley Makalusky 3-pointer from the far corner of the court. The fast-paced first quarter took a turn over the final five minutes. DePaul jumped into a full court press and their ball pressure bothered BU which resulted in the ‘Dawgs committing five turnovers over the final five minutes of the quarter. DePaul ended the frame on an 11-0 run and would own a 23-15 lead early at Wintrust Arena.
Grace Carstensen’s third made 3-pointer of the game came early in the second quarter and the Bulldogs would take an early timeout to stop the Blue Demon momentum. Butler didn’t score a point until the midway point of the frame and the Bulldogs would be limited to just nine second quarter points which led to DePaul grabbing a 37-24 lead at the half.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews led all players with 14 points at the break. Makalusky was the Bulldog leading scorer with seven.
Butler’s scoring struggles continued in the second half. Carter had a field goal in the third, but the other three points came from the free throw line. Lily Carmody continued to attack for BU in the fourth. She scored eight of her 12 points over the final 10 minutes to lead the team in scoring.
